New mobile app for Reddaway customers

Enjoy improved efficiency and productivity

Reddaway's new mobile appReddaway's new mobile app provides customers instant and convenient on-the-go access to real-time shipment tracking and monitoring as well as the latest Reddaway news.

The new mobile tool is free and comes in the two most popular platforms--iOS and Android--in addition to a mobile web version that virtually everyone can access. 

"We're trying to make this as accessible to as many people as we can," said Reddaway President and CEO T.J. O'Connor. "The ability to track shipments in real time--anywhere, anytime--really empowers our customers, opening the door to better and faster decision-making, increased responsiveness and improved productivity."

Its time-saving convenience is the first benefit Reddaway customers will see. Customers will be able to track their shipments on the go, wherever they are. All they need is the PRO, BOL or PO number for a given shipment.

Reddaway initially incorporated shipment tracking and news into the mobile app since those are the most frequented areas of its website. New features, such as the option to find service center locations, will be added in the coming months.

"I would like to let you know about the excellent service my wife and I received from your driver Travis Henderson (Seattle, WA). Mr. Henderson delivered a gun safe to our home on Tues., Jan. 10, 2012. 

Mr. Henderson arrived within the scheduled delivery window. He was very courteous and professional. My father is a retired Teamster truck driver, and I know a little about what it takes to drive tractors with large trailers. Mr. Henderson is a pro and easily maneuvered his rig, reversing it up our narrow and steep driveway. Parking his truck in our driveway not only made it much easier for my wife and I to get the very heavy safe into our home, it did not impact traffic in our neighborhood, which also has narrow, hilly streets with limited visibility.

He was patient with us as we inspected and signed for the delivery. We were so impressed with his attitude and service that we offered him a tip. He politely refused, as he did our offer of something to drink and use of our restroom. He thanked us for our business and was in and out within twenty minutes!

Honing the tools for success

Just as you can't expect to catch fish with a broken rod, you can't expect to make deliveries with a faulty trailer.

That's why Greg Newland takes his job as equipment manager at the Reddaway garage operation in Fontana, CA very seriously. With over 20 years in the shipping industry, Greg knows what it takes to keep the wheels turning, and he is focused in his efforts to do so.

Greg Newland was born and raised on a farm in Kentucky, where a strong work ethic was instilled in him at an early age. That ethic was emboldened and solidified by his eight years of service in the Marine Corps, and he carries those values with him into the Fontana center every day.

"Every line of work requires discipline and motivation. The values that I grew up with provide me a sense of purpose and a desire to persevere and succeed."

That discipline and drive allows Greg Newland to help service one of the busiest terminals in the region. The shop keeps over 95% of its fleet available to the Fontana, CA terminal daily, and though it's no easy task, Greg and the team get the job done. Even more importantly, they get it done safely.

Naomi Gonzalez provides morning customer support and runs OS&D (over, short and damages) for California's Fresno and Santa Maria terminals. Best wishes to her as she celebrates her fifth anniversary with Reddaway this month!

"I've worked several times with her on difficult pickups at Lidestri Foods, and she has unfailingly done an outstanding job. Naomi is also very cheerful, which is sometimes rare in this business."

"She knows taking care of the customer is the best thing to do from a company point of view," says Tim Sennett, terminal manager for FresnoSanta Maria and Bakersfield, CA. "And, she does very well with that. I've heard loud, upset people call on the phone. She listens to them, and she's able to calm them down. A lot of people don't comprehend the big picture. The way she understands and explains it to them, they can understand it. Then they actually calm down."

Explains Naomi, "I like to learn as much as I can from my manager and my sales reps so I know where to go for answers and can better help our customers."

Naomi likes the variety in her job. Every day is different.

It can be challenging to find a destination when delivering along the coast. Some areas might have an address that's not listed on a map or in GPS. A customer may provide driving directions to turn right at the oak tree, go up the road three miles and turn left at the pump. "Sketchy directions like those require careful communication with the driver," Naomi says.

Naomi may be working on a project or a report when a phone call comes in that can change the entire day. She answers her customers' questions and leaves them happy and satisfied.

"Naomi works well with people--both our internal and external customers. They know she gets things done," says Tim. "So when they have a problem, a lot of times they don't even call me, the terminal manager, they call her. She's proven herself in making solid decisions for the company."

Consumer spending slows but savings increaseConsumer spending accounts for more than 70 percent of GDP and nearly all of the goods-moving segment of the U.S. economy (which is approximately $6.5 trillion annually).

Spending in December was essentially flat after rising in the previous two months. Household income was higher but rising energy, fuel, and food prices held retail sales down slightly.

Consumers increased their use of credit to make purchases on a broad scale--which some economists worry could reduce their ability to spend in the future if inflation on food and fuel increases while incomes remain somewhat flat. Consumer optimism, a barometer of sentiment, seemed to be improved across most districts in the U.S. for December. Find out more.

Thailand flooding could impact supply chain through 2014Many U.S. supply chain managers may not think about the impact of Thailand flooding this year on the global supply chain, but 40 percent of the world's motherboards are produced in the country.

227 companies were under water this summer--and only 15 have resumed "normal" operations.

The impact on the U.S. supply chain and the movement of freight goods is significant. High-tech goods and components that utilize computer motherboards will see these disruptions continue.

And, if there is a risk that these flooding situations could continue for the next two years, many companies will decide to near-source in the West, Midwest, or upper northeast of the U.S. Some will also increase their sourcing in Mexico as a result--as long as disruptions from drug cartel violence are kept in check. Key maritime freight metric falls

Key maritime freight metric fallsThe Baltic Dry Index is one of the oldest global freight indexes still in use today. It measures the cost to move goods across the most active maritime trade lanes in the world.

The index has plummeted over the past month to come in at 702 points as of January 30, 2012. For comparison, the index had a high of 11,000 points in the summer of 2008 and a low of 666 just six months later in the spring of 2009.

Today, analysts believe that the maritime sector has increased capacity far exceeding demand. In addition, there is a global slowing of raw material movement of goods with European countries at risk of going into recession.

Analysts believe that a number of maritime companies could be at risk of bankruptcy as a result of weaker global volumes and poor overcapacity situation in the bulk shipping sector. Get additional info.

Highlighting how trucking affects our lives, and the people who make it happen

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, on a typical day in the United States about 32 million tons of goods valued at 25.2 billion dollars move via trucks on our nation's highways.

Here at Reddaway, we understand that at the core of those statistics are real, hardworking people--people who climb into a truck cab every day to keep America's gears turning. That's why we have created this new series "By Way of the Highway"--to honor the people who transport the goods we need to survive. 


As a child, Reddaway driver Arturo (Art) Ayala (Orange, CA) would sit with his friends in his front yard and watch trucks as they made deliveries to the grocery store across the street. With wide eyes they'd watch the trucks come and go, and listen to the bustle of workers loading freight.

Not long after those days, Art would find himself behind the wheel of a big rig himself. In 1977, at the age of 18, Arturo received his Class 1 Commercial Driver's License, and has been driving trucks ever since.

Arturo Ayala, Orange, CAMore than 34 years later, Art has set himself apart as a model driver, racking up well over 2 million miles of accident-free service. When asked what it takes to handle a big rig safely, Arturo responded without hesitation, "Patience and awareness. Don't rush. Don't get upset. Try to anticipate what others around you are going to do. Always keep your cool, and just be nice."

As we all know, sometimes it's hard to keep your cool on the road, but Art explains his ability to do so simply: "I want to get home after every run. I have a five-year-old daughter waiting at home for me every day, and I'm always thinking about her."

With his wife and two children always in his thoughts, Art truly values safety, and that's one of the reasons he enjoys working with Reddaway. "I've worked with other companies in the past where I'd get in my truck and have to cross my fingers. Reddaway always keeps its equipment in tip-top shape, and they know that their drivers need proper rest."

Proper rest is important for Art, as his route is a triple run starting at 10 p.m. from Orange, CA to Las Vegas, NV, and then on to Cedar City, UT. He spends an average of ten hours a night on the road and is home every other day.

For some, that kind of schedule might be unappealing, but not for Art. He loves truck driving and the freedom it provides. He cherishes the responsibility and trust given to him every time he gets behind the wheel, and enjoys being a part of the Reddaway team.

"I never get up and think, 'Oh no, I have to go to work!' I come to work every day with a smile on my face. I'd rather work here than anywhere else. The people are great. I make a good living, and I'm never gone long enough for my wife to miss me."

With a positive attitude that is famous at the Orange, CA terminal, and a commitment to safety, Arturo Ayala exemplifies what we value most at Reddaway. With drivers like Art on our team, we know that we can continue to be the best in the region in safety, reliability, and customer service.
