Quest for Quality honors for performance excellence

Reddaway relocates

7720 SW Mohawk St., Building H, Tualatin, OR 
On August 13, 2012 Reddaway officially commenced operations in its new corporate facility in Tualatin, OR!

The new headquarters--at 7720 SW Mohawk St., Building H, Tualatin, OR 97062--features more modern facilities, more effective use of space, and a more convenient location (adjacent to Interstate 5) for Reddaway employees.

An open house was held in the new facilities on August 4 to celebrate the relocation, and to connect with Tualatin officials. Employees, customers, vendors, and members of the community convened for food, entertainment, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the grand opening.

"Reddaway is at a very exciting moment right now," said Reddaway President and CEO, TJ O'Connor. "As our operations continue to expand, we felt it was necessary to move to a headquarters that was more suited to that expansion. The new facilities offer an ideal setting for the continued evolution of our business, and we look forward to many successful years in Tualatin."

Fast, reliable and secure across the border 
With more next-day lanes between the western United States and western Canada than any other provider, Reddaway meets the demand for fast, reliable and secure service across the border.

Reddaway will soon begin testing the Advance Commercial Information (ACI) program of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The program requires carriers to electronically transmit cargo information for highway and rail shipments to the CBSA.

The ACI program improves border protection while streamlining border crossings into Canada. Participation is mandatory beginning Nov. 1.

"Customers will see better service as a single shipment that could cause an entire trailer to be delayed can be identified before the truck reaches the border," said Brian Hill, manager of the Reddaway terminal in Vancouver.

Reddaway provides direct service throughout Metro Vancouver through a 10-door terminal staffed by seven drivers and four office employees. The terminal is located in the community of Delta. "Our central location means less travel time for pickups and deliveries and better access to most customer locations," said Brian.

The Reddaway facility includes a Customs-bonded warehouse for storing goods that do not clear Canada Customs. "It's a secured warehouse with video surveillance and a security guard during off-duty hours. To help speed deliveries, Customs comes to our warehouse to clear goods, if needed," Brian explained.

British Columbia's central interior region and Vancouver Island are served through two new interline providers, Comox Pacific Express and Overland West. Reddaway serves the rest of Canada through partner Manitoulin Transport.

On-time delivery performance is 98 percent throughout Canada.

Why your Canada shipments must be WPM compliant 
The U.S. spends an estimated $138 million each year fighting the effects of invasion by nonnative plants, seeds, animal and insect species.

To prevent nonnative species from entering the U.S. via truck cargo, regulations regarding wood packaging material (WPM) were enacted in 2005 as part of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

There have been more shipment delays and refusals at the border due to increased training of U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers.

With rare exceptions, the CPB refuses shipments on pallets or packaged with materials that do not comply with IPPC regulations.

Reddaway's state champions compete at nationals 
Four Reddaway drivers put their driving skills and knowledge of vehicle operation and federal safety regulations to the test at the National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) in Minneapolis, MN.

Competing in a field of more than 400 state-level champions were Scott Colwell (ID, sleeper); Tracy Dewees (CA, twins); Joe Kwiatkowski (UT, flatbed); and Scott Rideout (NV, twins).

These four drivers have proven themselves to be among the nation's most safest and professional. To qualify for the national event, each placed first in their respective class at their state contests and maintained accident-free safety records the preceding year.

The NTDC is an annual competition of professional truck drivers hosted by the American Trucking Associations. The NTDC challenged more than 400 drivers on many levels including skill behind the wheel, knowledge of safety rules and regulations, and the ability to spot safety hazards during a pre-trip inspection.

Driving contests are more than a test of how well a driver can operate a vehicle--they are a safety program that challenges drivers to sharpen their driving skills.

Thirty Reddaway drivers competed in local and state driving competitions this year. We congratulate each one for their professionalism and personal goals to make themselves better and safer drivers. Every mile safely driven increases the value Reddaway brings to your supply chain.

For administrative assistant, Gina Rappe (Tacoma, WA), each new day brings its own unique host of "to-dos" and challenges. In addition to her regular duties such as drafting daily reports and spreadsheets, she operates as the primary point of contact for a number of large accounts from around the region.

Some days, she arrives at the Tacoma, WA facility at 7 a.m. with 6 or 7 quote-requests already on her desk, all requiring immediate fulfillment. However, with her strong blend of experience and personal traits, Gina always rises to the occasion.

According to Reddaway Vice President (Northern Division), Carl Hicks, "Gina has an uncanny ability to take a challenging situation and turn it into a positive customer experience. She understands our customers' perspectives, their concerns, and how to reach solutions."

When asked what motivates her to give her best to all of her customers, Gina explained, "I treat customers in the way that I would want to be treated. I provide them with what I would expect and want. I do whatever I can do to make a customer happy. I never want to feel as if they hung up the phone dissatisfied."

In addition to her positive philosophy on customer service, Gina brings to her role a rich professional experience. With 22 years working in customer service--the past 12 of which she's spent with Reddaway--Gina knows the ins-and-outs of the field. "I know my way around the system and can research quickly to identify and resolve issues--by either getting the information I need or identifying the right person to go to."

 Reddaway pros improve PRO labels
, efficiency, and accuracy are all invaluable elements of great shipping, and we at Reddaway are in constant pursuit of optimizing them. For us, it's the details that count the most, and by leaving no detail unnoticed, we continue to lead the region in on-time, claim-free, next-day service.

One of the most recent details we've put under the microscope is our PRO label. After some customer feedback we've revamped it to limit errors, streamline processes, and in the end, provide you with a superior service.

The font size on the new labels is considerably larger and easier to read which means quicker processing and less errors. With time saved and errors reduced, we intend to achieve even lower claim ratios.

The new labels have also been outfitted with barcodes to allow for seamless access to PRO information via handheld devices. Barcodes allow Reddaway professionals to scan a PRO label on the dock and view shipment information without a computer.

In addition, the presence of barcodes on our PRO labels opens the door for future dock technology improvements with OS&D and W&R tools.

Highlighting how trucking affects our lives, and the people who make it happen

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, on a typical day in the United States about 32 million tons of goods valued at 25.2 billion dollars move via trucks on our nation's highways.

Here at Reddaway, we understand that at the core of those statistics are real, hardworking people--people who climb into a truck cab every day to keep America's gears turning. That's why we have created this series "By Way of the Highway"--to honor the people who transport the goods we need to survive. 

Reddaway professional driver, Joe Kwiatkowski has been in the transportation industry for over 22 years, and has spent the last 19 of those years developing a sterling driving career at Reddaway.

Joe is currently running on 16 consecutive years of accident-free driving, with over 1.5 million safe miles racked up over that period.

He currently holds the elite million-miler award status and is on track to reach the even more rare and prestigious 2-million-miler award.

Joe is a linehaul driver, currently running triples from his base terminal in Saint George to Salt Lake City, UT. He makes the 508-mile round-trip five days a week and also occasionally fills in for local runs when needed.

Unfazed by the demanding schedule, Joe has taken his own time to train and compete in the Utah Truck Driving Championships a total of six times over his career.

After second and third place wins in past years, Joe took first place in the flatbed class at the 2012 Utah Truck Driving Championships in June. He went to Minneapolis, MN earlier in August to compete in the National Truck Driving Championships.

"I like to challenge myself," said Joe. "I'm always trying to improve my skills and improve upon my previous score. I'm more motivated by seeing how well I can improve as opposed to how well I do against others."

When asked what he does to keep up that constant improvement, Joe explained that training and conduct are key.

"With laws, equipment, and safety systems always changing, you have to always stay informed and educated. And when you're on the road, you have to constantly remain aware and attentive."
